Teacher feedback is the important guarantee of an orderly classroom,the effective channel for students' language input and the necessary way to create a high-efficient classroom and new style relationship between teachers and students.Modern education emphasizes “student centered”,aims at establishing classes in which teachers work as the leader and students as the main part.In order to be a qualified leader,teachers must learn to use teacher feedback well.Most of the studies on teacher feedback focus on high quality classes,which is insufficient and not applicable to the ordinary senior high schools.Therefore,the author takes Yantai No.1 Senior High School as the research subject and conducts a throughout and comprehensive study on teacher feedback in class.This thesis tries to solve the following questions:(1)What's the English teachers' views of teacher feedback in class?(2)What are the types and functions of teacher feedback in English class?(3)What's teachers' and students' preference for teacher feedback in English class?In this thesis,the author mainly adopted classroom observation,questionnaire and interview to investigate and analyze teacher feedback in senior high school from different perspectives.The author observed six classes from Grade One.30 lessons were observed,so 30 classroom observation tables were filled.Then the questionnaires were studied out and distributed to 300 students of the six classes.285 questionnaires were valid.At last,six English teachers of the six classes were interviewed,and the interview was recorded.After the data were collected,the way of feedback on the classroom tables were classified,and the frequency of each way of feedback was counted.The answers of the 285 valid questionnaires were entered into the Sojump and analyzed.The record of teachers' interview was transcribed and analyzed according to the research questions.It is found that although teachers know the importance of teacher feedback,their attention on teacher feedback is not enough,and they do not have a comprehensive understanding of its functions and types,which is difficult for English teachers to take full advantage of teacher feedback.There are 24 ways of feedback which are divided into 9 types according to their functions.These 9 feedback categories are sequenced according to the frequency as follows: positive feedback,induction,metalinguistic feedback,replacement,repetition,explicit correction,reformulation,emotional attitude feedback and clarification request.As for the preference for teacher feedback,teachers and students are basically consistent.They prefer to the positive feedback when students give the right answer;they like the feedback that could inspire and induce ideas when students don't know how to answer;they are keen on the feedback that could prompt and lead thinking when students answer incorrectly.
