Teachers' professional level plays a significant role in the process of English teaching in evaluating the quality of education in junior middle schools.In order to promote English teachers' professional quality,and ensure the high level of English teaching,it has become an important subject in quality education.However,many studies mainly focus on the theoretical analysis of teachers' professional development.Therefore,it is essential to investigate the current situation of junior middle school English teachers' professional development.Three research questions are put forward:(1)What is the current situation of junior middle school English teachers' professional development?(2)What are the main problems remained in junior middle school English teachers' professional development?(3)What are the main factors that influence junior middle school English teachers' professional development?In view of the three research questions,this paper uses the method of questionnaire and the method of interview to study 72 junior middle school English teachers' professional development in three schools in Yantai City,including Yantai Foreign Language Experimental School,Yantai Number 10 Middle School,Yantai Experimental School of Development Zone.The professional development of junior middle school English teachers mainly includes the following aspects: teachers' basic information,professional knowledge,professional ability,professional emotion,professional awareness,professional pressure and motivation and so on.Through the analysis of the data,when it comes to the basic situation of teachers,the proportion of male and female English teachers in junior middle schools is seriously imbalanced.Junior middle school English teachers in English majors are 63.2%,while 36.8% of English teachers who are not in English majors fail to meet teaching requirements and the need of their professional development due to the lack of English professional knowledge.From the perspective of professional knowledge and professional ability,junior middle school English teachers mostly have a good command,but teaching evaluation ability,teaching research ability and teaching reflection ability need to be improved.In terms of the source of pressure and the motivation structure of teachers' professional development,the evaluation of titles greatly influences junior middle school English teachers' professional development,accounting for 61.8% and 63.2% respectively.From professional awareness,55.9% of junior middle school English teachers meet their own current situation of professional development,while only 19.1% of junior middle school English teachers plan their future professional development.Aiming at current situation and problems,this thesis has provided relatively rational suggestions for junior middle school English teachers' professional development and supplied corresponding reference for schools and educational authorities.
