As is known to all,reading teaching plays an important role in junior middle school English teaching,and one of important objectives for students is to develop their reading ability.Students' English reading ability has been considered as an important part for the evaluation of their English proficiency.Therefore,it has become an effective means to construct the system of student-centered instructional activities in reading teaching.In this study,200 students and 40 teachers of second grade from No.10 Junior Middle School and Foreign Language School in Yantai are selected as the research participants.The study investigates the design,the implementation of instructional activities and existing problems in English reading class in junior middle school.Research instruments in this study include questionnaires,interview method and observation method.The three research questions in this study are as follows:1.What instructional activities are designed and employed by teachers in English reading classroom?2.How are these instructional activities implemented and what is the implementation effect?3.What are major problems about instructional activities in English reading classroom of junior middle schools?Major findings are summarized as follows:(1)In English reading classroom,most of teachers would like to choose various forms of activities among which group work and role play are popular and can activate classroom atmosphere and arouse students' interest in reading.(2)In the process of implementation of instructional activity,most of teachers would like to play the role of assistants,and other teachers would work as participants or host.However,there are still some teachers who think that they are onlookers.What's more,most of the teachers often teach reading methods skills in every stages in order to penetrate reading strategies and training into practice.After the implementation of instructional activities,teachers would evaluate timely for students performances,of course,there are few who did not do well enough.As for the students,most of them believe that instructional activities can help them become more interested in reading,more capable of comprehending the passage,and confident in English learning.However,there are a few students who have a negative attitude toward these instructional activities,even completely against them.(3)At present there are some problems about instructional activities,such as unreasonable design,irrelevant to students' daily life,lack of diversity,as well as inadequate participation of students,etc.Due to these problems,the writer puts forward some suggestions for English teachers in junior middle school.(1)The design of instructional activities should arouse students' interests,and the contents of activities should be connected with students' daily life.(2)Teachers are supposed to provide some reading methods and skills for students,and they are expected to adopt a student-centered approach for implementation of these instructional activities at class.(3)Finally,teachers should make timely evaluation for students' performance and reflect upon the instructional activities after the implementation.
