The new curriculum of basic English education has gone through more than ten years since 2001.With the development of new teaching philosophies and methods,the basic English educators have been dedicated to paying more attention to the design and organization of class activities in English teaching.Moreover,the homework design and research of middle school English teaching have gradually aroused the concern of many scholars and teachers.However,the research of differential homework designs based on the students' individual differences needs to be highly focused on.As is well known,homework plays a significant role in students' study and development.It can not be denied that at present,there are still many problems in English homework designs in the junior English teaching.Such as the students still have so much exam-oriented written homework;the students' comprehensive language abilities are not yet integrated into the design of junior middle school English homework;the hierarchical design of English homework in junior middle schools has not received the due attention and practice;the students' individual differences are still not fully valued and respected.Thus,boring and unchangeably monotonous homework has gradually reduced the interests and enthusiasm of good English learners;the self-confidence of students with learning difficulties suffers serious frustration;so great disparity in students' English levels appears junior English learning.Based on the investigation and analysis of the existing problems in homework design and implementation of junior school English teaching,the present research aims to explore how to carry out the differential English homework design on the improvement of students' English learning interest and the comprehensive language abilities.Under the guidance of Multiple Intelligence Theory,Disparity Theory and Autonomous Learning Theory,the present research is carried out through the literature review of many related academic materials at home and abroad,with the reference of previous studies on the differential homework assignments and design principles and methods,this study is to adopt literature review,interview,case analysis and questionnaire investigation as the research methods.Taking 40 students in Class 2,Grade 2 of Qingdao No.37 Middle School as the subjects of the study,according to the principles of stratification within class,stratification of homework knowledge and skill difficulties,as well as autonomous stratification,this research is carried out within one semester.Firstly,through interview and investigation the study tries to uncover the existing problems in junior school English homework design and implementation.Then it aims to explore how to carry out the differential English homework design and implementation.After the experiment,the students are surveyed so as to prove the effect of the differential homework design and implementation.Through analysis and discussion,it is found out that multi-leveled homework can reduce the homework hours and decrease the plagiarism phenomena.Besides,the students' homework attitude has been improved and their interest and enthusiasm of English learning have been enhanced.In addition,the measurement data are collected and analyzed by using the method of pre and post test,and the SPSS is used to analyze the data.The results of the statistics analysis show that the multi-leveled homework has greatly promoted the students'English study.This study suggests that the implementation of layered homework in junior English teaching can better mobilize junior school students' English learning initiative compared with the traditional operation,in this way,students in different levels can choose the corresponding tasks of learning.Therefore,English learning abilities and scores of excellent student groups have been obviously enhanced,while English learning and achievement of the students with learning problems also have obvious transformation.The results of this study are consistent with the results of the questionnaires.Based on the research results,through the case study of various types of differential homework design,as well as the specific analysis and discussion,this research hopes to provide some meaningful suggestions for the practice of junior high school English homework design.The author of the study holds that in line with students' individual differences,homework should be designed as individualized as possible.Besides,with scientific design of differential homework,both achievements and personality are to be taken into consideration;benefit by mutual discussion,the teacher's execution of new curriculum is to be promoted.It is sincerely hoped that this study can shed light on the junior English teachers and educators.Further,the result of the study can proyide meaningful reference and guidance so that multi-leveled homework will play a significant role promoting students' comprehensive English abilities and accordingly,all the students with different levels can get improved and developed.
