With the rapid development of information technology, various attendance management systems have been applied to personnel management of many enterprises and government departments. However, these application systems are not suitable for students' attendance management in universities because they may cause more cost for schools, heavier workload for teachers, and even a waste of time. The thesis aims to design a proper management system for universities, which is convenient and effective to check students' class attendance. This system can not only achieve the general attendance management, such as the attendance of staff members, the arrangement of classrooms and different courses, etc. but also adopt an intelligent way of attendance management for universities, not taking up extra time of students and teachers.This thesis consists of the major technology, system requirement analysis, overall design and implementation of the system. By introducing face recognition technology which is rather mature currently, combining face detection/recognition and traditional attendance management technology, the basic function of the system can be achieved. Then, the thesis conducts a detailed analysis of system requirements with the method of software engineering, including the analysis of classroom setting and the system function. The design part is based on an overall planning, dividing the system into four modules, solving the problems of image acquisition, face marking, face recognition and attendance checking respectively, and providing database tables. According to the four modules of system design, the implementation part configures suitable development environment and computer vision library, completes the key codes of the four modules with Visual Studio, and designs the corresponding program interface. Finally, the whole system is tested, and the results indicate that the system can basically realize the functions in the requirement analysis.
