As is known to all,a language consists of three elements: phonetics,vocabulary and grammar,of which the importance of vocabulary is particularly prominent,and that is because vocabulary is the carrier of phonetics and grammar,therefore,learning vocabulary well has been a key to learning English well.The English curriculum standard for senior high school and the national college entrance examination put forward a relatively higher request in English vocabulary----the high school graduates should master 3000 words and 400-500 idioms or collocations.The number of vocabulary has influenced the effect of students' English learning directly in senior high school.Besides,the time of senior high school,especially at senior one,is a critical period during the whole English learning.Based on the above reasons,the author carried out the research on the English vocabulary teaching at senior one in No.2 High School of Qionglai,trying to put forward constructive suggestions to the existing problems,and provide some effective help for the teachers in English vocabulary teaching.The author carried out a detailed research on the present situation of English vocabulary teaching at senior one in general high school through observation,vocabulary test,questionnaire and interview.The content of the research includes: the present situation of English vocabulary teaching at senior one in general high school;the difficulties in English vocabulary learning at the first term of senior one and the reasons;the reasons why there are difficulties in English vocabulary teaching at senior one in general high school.By analyzing the data and combining with the results of observation,questionnaire and interview,the author has found that the present situation of English vocabulary teaching is worrying: the students have the desire to learn vocabulary well but are short of scientific and applicable learning methods while the teachers make more efforts to teach vocabulary with low efficiency because of neglecting the guiding and training of the learning methods and strategies,therefore,the effect of English vocabulary teaching is not satisfying.According to these problems,the authors has also put forward some suggestions: in the process of English vocabulary teaching,the teachers are suggested to strengthen the guidance of learning methods and learning strategies,to apply various and practical teaching methods to stimulate the students' learning interest in English vocabulary and to help students develop good learning habits in order to make the English vocabulary teaching more efficiently.
