Textbook is an important component of the practice of English curriculum.Choosing and using a suitable textbook is an important prerequisite for the completion of the learning tasks and the achievement of the learning objectives.With the deepening of the reform in the new curriculum and the development of foreign language teaching,diversified editions of English textbooks have appeared,which makes the evaluation of textbook very important.The “English Textbook” published by Shandong Education Press in 2012 is compiled according to the new curriculum.As it is used for some years,it is high time and necessary to evaluate the textbook and investigate the current use of it.Through understanding its current use,we can use it more effectively in the future.The research participants are 200 students and 30 teachers from Yantai No.1Middle School and Yantai No.10 Middle School.According to the evaluation theories of Van Els,T(1984)and Qian Yuan(1995),textbook evaluation should be taken into account from not only the matching of textbooks and teaching syllabus,but also users’ views on the textbooks.On the one hand,the thesis introduces Shangdong version of English book to confirm the requirements in accordance with the syllabus.On the other hand,the author designs textbook evaluation questionnaires based on Grant’ checklist to investigate the use of this set of textbook.At the same time,interviews with teachers are also carried out.The results show that most teachers and students are satisfied with the textbook to some extent.The major findings are briefly summarized as follows: this set of textbook is helpful to students’ overall development and lifelong language learning ability.For example,it pays attention to not only language knowledge,language skills,but also emotional attitude,learning strategies and cultural awareness.However,some other aspects affect teachers’ and students’ satisfaction with the textbook,such as theweakness in the learning strategy guidance,large vocabulary and activities that are difficult to operate etc..Finally,some suggestions for teachers and compilers are proposed to better meet students’ learning.
