With the deepening of the reform of the basic education and the rapid development of theknowledge updating, it is imperative to update the teaching content. The departments ofeducation all over the country are amending the teaching materials which is adapt to students.The revisions of the teaching materials depend largely on the feedback of its users.Evaluating the teaching materials and investigating the current use of teaching materials willhelp to perfect the revision of the textbook and will be beneficial for teachers to use iteffectively. To face this situation, we need to evaluate textbooks and investigate the currentuse of the textbook, and give the teachers some practical advice about how to use the textbookmore effectively.The “English Textbook” published by Shandong Education Press in2012is a new set ofEnglish teaching material adapted from” Go for it”. It is suitable for students of five-foursegment. It is compiled according to the new curriculum as the background, and there are3copies in all so far. The set of the materials is still under the experiment period, so it isnecessary to evaluate the textbook and investigate the current use about it. Throughunderstanding the advantages and shortage of the textbook and its current use condition, wecan improve and perfect the textbook as well as use it more effectively in the future.There are five parts in this thesis. Chapter one is an introduction, in which the background,purpose, significance, content and methods of the investigation are introduced. The secondchapter is the review of the literature, mainly introducing the relative investigation on Englishteaching material. Firstly, the concept and function of English Textbook teaching material aredefined,and then the evaluation criteria of English teaching material is discussed in this part.In the last part of chapter two, it is about the research on the evaluation and the investigationof current use of English teaching material at home and abroad. The third chapter is a textanalysis of the textbook “English Textbook” published by Shandong Education Press, whichconsist of the compiling background, the basic structural system, the idea and theme, the mainfeature of the book, etc. The fourth chapter analyses the current use of the textbook by usingthe data collected from the students’ and teachers’ questionnaires and some interviews. Wecan conclude that there are lots of advantages about the “English Textbook” published by Shandong Education Press. The integrated design of the textbook is lively in the form and it isconducive to cultivate students’ culture consciousness. The textbook pays more attention tocultivate students’ listening, speaking, reading and writing skill. The textbook is rich inteaching content and wide in topic range. There are many forms of task design, so it isbeneficial for teachers to put to good use of their autonomy and innovative spirit. However,there are many disadvantages about the textbook.1. It mainly reflected in these aspects asfollow:2.The textbook can’t arouse students’ interest enough to learn English.3. There is anexcess of content in the textbook, as well as it is too difficult for many of the students to learnit well. What’s more, the repetition rates of the vocabulary and grammar focous are not highenough for students to get them easily.4. The task-design demands too high for teachers todevelop these tasks in classroom. What teaching activities teachers adopted are just ran intoopposite direction of students’ interests. The last chapter is the conclusion of the investigation.It consists two parts. The first part is the conclusion of the investigation according to theanalysis of the textbook in chapter three and the findings of the current use in chapter four. Inthe second part, the writer put forth some practical suggestions for the editors, the teachersand the education administrators to perfect the textbook and make it is be used moreeffectively.
