A new term “Confucius Institute martial art teacher” rises in response to the rapid development of CI. But it is still at the beginning stage for the research about defining this new term, talent selection system and especially about the ability evaluation system.Properly defining the ability system and studying scientific evaluation methods is the presupposition to the selection and training of Confucius Institute martial art teacher and is the primary driving force for the sustainable development of martial art in CI abroad.This paper adopts a wide range of research methods including literature analysis,interview and questionnaire to select, identify and justify indicators of ability system of Confucius Institute martial art teachers, further coming up with a framework consisting of four layers of criteria and sixteen layers of indicators.Based on the research above, an evaluation model is built featuring priority coefficients of the indicators for assessing abilities of Confucius Institute martial art teachers. This model has been applied for evaluating in-service martial art teachers and selecting martial art teachers for Confucius Institute. Results indicate that this model is qualified for revealing the overall conditions and individual features of the martial art teachers objectively and accurately, shedding light on the comparisons among those teachers thus providing judgment references for the evaluators and judges, and facilitating organizers of Confucius Institute to assign tasks to the martial art teachers based on their individual features to achieve the best efficiency.It is concluded that the nature of Confucius Institute martial art teachers' job defines its unique proficiency structure. And the core feature is the great importance attached to flexible teaching methods and communication skills. According to the evaluation indicators' importance and relativity in teaching practice and their priority in the evaluation model, it is summed that the four core abilities for Confucius Institute martial art teachers are martial art proficiency, martial art performance, teaching methodsand communication skills.
