English language skills consist of four parts: listening,speaking,reading and writing.Listening and reading are the major ways of language information input.And the learners' output: speaking and writing are based on the enough language input.So the language information input is the key point.Since our English learners lack natural listening and speaking environment,reading becomes the major way for them to obtain language input and promote language proficiency.However,in our country,the traditional teacher-centered teaching mode is ingrained and it takes the scores as the first principle to examine the learners' overall qualities.This leads the learners to listen to the teachers passively and consequently their enthusiasm is low in classroom.As for the developments of the students,these problems which exist in English teaching in the junior middle school need to be solved urgently.In order to know the current situation of cooperative learning in junior high school students' English reading learning and existing problems,the author designed the following three questions:1.What is the current situation of cooperative learning in the Affiliated Middle School of Henan Normal University?2.What are the advantages and disadvantages of cooperative learning in English reading?3.What are the problems caused by the disadvantages of cooperative learning in English reading and what are the possible solutions?As analyzed above,the author intends to combine the cooperative learning with English reading teaching and improve the development of language cognition and affective attitude which are not only to meet the requirement of the examination-oriented education but also enhance the application capability.The author conducted a five-month experiment in the Affiliated Middle School of Henan Normal University.At the beginning of the experiment,a pre-questionnaire and a pre-test on English reading were given out to the participants in order to understand the learners' learning condition before the research.After one semester,the learners took part in the post-questionnaire and post-test which aimed to investigate whether their reading scores improved or not.At last,the author made a formal interview in order to understand the students' feelings and suggestions about the usage of the cooperative learning teaching method.According to the data and the results in the research,the conclusions are drawn as follows: Cooperative learning method not only creates a positive,enjoyable and relaxed atmosphere in English class which raises the students' interest and initiative then enhances their English reading achievement,but also develops the learners' English learning skills and interpersonal communication skills.
