The improvement of biological science literacy is one of the basic idea of biology course, and the central task of science education. Some education experts believe that it is better to teach the students method rather than knowledge. While, the history of biological science is a vivid teaching material to cultivate the students’ biological science literacy. The study of biological science can helps the students understand the nature of science, constructs the framework of knowledge, and cultivates their biological science literacy which is of great significance.Because of a delay of the history of biological science in biology teaching, teachers did not realized the important educational value of the history of biological science. Compared with the historical, political and other liberal arts, history of biological science in the process of teaching is often overlooked and did not get enough attention from the teachers and students.Thus, further excavation of the potential educational value of the history of biological science is required.This study literature reviews the research progress on the history of biological science at home and abroad, and finds out that the national attention on the history of biological science is rising, but the development trend is relatively flat; the educational value of the history of biological science gained the approval of the educators, but still facing many problems in teaching. This study analysis the high school students’ learning of the history of biological science through questionnaire. The results shows that students have a strong interest in learning the history of biological science, but still lack of realization of the potential educational value of the history of science. Through teacher interviews, this study figures out that there should be more attention on the history of biological sciences in teaching. By textbook analysis, this studyfinds out that the PEP edition high school biology textbook contains a large number of biological resources in the history of science, it is a lively textbook of scientific inquiry which reflects the history of biological science. In this study, a comprehensive case method shows that the use of the history of biological science helps students understands the nature of science, builds their scientific inquiry ability, improves their logical reasoning ability and advances their biological science literacy.All in all, the introduction of the history of science in high school biology teaching helps students in-depth understanding the science essence, and contributes to achieve teaching goals, so as to make the high school biology learning a high beginning and a widen vision curriculum. The role of the history of science in our study is of certain reference values to the high school biology teaching, while further perfection is needed.
