National Identity In The Pluralistic Time

In the past,people believed religion and culture of local domain and nation,and fully approved their own culture,history and folklore.They may produce a unique national sense of belonging and loyalty.Today of globalization,we are certainly unable to adapt to the needs of modern society's collective identity only based on ethnic identity.It is also easy to lead to extreme nationalism.Isolation and exclusivity of nationalism will also cause more problems.On the one hand,the advancement of globalization has brought unprecedented prosperity to the world,but on the other hand,different cultures,pluralistic values and ideological collision and fusion have remained an urgent problem.The concept of constitutional patriotism was first proposed by former West Germany's Sternberg.Habermas was the most determined supporter and most influential advocate of constitutional patriotism.Habermas' constitutional patriotism is different from traditional nation identity.It argues that in modern society which is unlike before,we should be committed to making democratic consultation and rights more institutionalized,rather than relying on the identification of special historically culture and ethnic groups.Habermas argues that under the current situation of multiculturalism,the political consensus of all the people are the constitution which needs to be consulted generally by citizens.And the provisions are specifically publicized,widely recognized and not controversial.This constitution should also adequately reflect the norms and value basis of the state and the people.This paper is composed of introduction,body and conclusion.The body part discusses the Habermas' constitutional patriotism from four aspects:The first is the background of the times.This part is going to explain the background of the times from many problems caused by globalization.The evolution of globalization brings multiple values and cultural collision,and inevitably impacts on the traditional nation-state.The collective identity crisis in this context is exactly what Habermas' constitutional patriotism wants to solve.The second is the theoretical origin.This part aims to to explain traditional theories of Habermas' constitutional patriotism from Kant's universalism(world citizens),Jaspers' universalism(world peace and world order)and Sternberg's constitutional patriotism.This part is going to discuss the development of Habermas'constitutional patriotism from cosmopolitan values,the national view of post-nationalist era and democratic consultation.The third is the connotation.National identity of constitutional patriotism is different.It advocates democratic consultation and rights to be more institutionalized.National identity is not as the same as before that only relied on the recognition of special historical culture and the identity of the ethnic groups.This part aims to discuss the core content mainly from 3 aspects:the foundation of politically public domain,the key of rational communication and the purpose of collective identity.The forth is contending.This part will sort out all parties' questions based on three reasons:the universal value of constitution is not enough to maintain social cohesion as well as the practical effectiveness of nationalism and constitutional patriotism' practical feasibility.This par will also debate for Habermas' constitutional patriotism by discussing whether the social solidarity of constitution is too weak.Nation-state's dilemma in contemporary globe and multi-culture is also discussed.And this part will also analyze the natural model of constitutional patriotism.And finally this part is going to show the vitality of constitutional patriotism theory from the perspective of innovation and development.
