Recently, with the training and the military mission of the PLA Rocket Force become increasely innovative and scientific, soldiers from the PLA Rocket Force have been faced a lot of pressure and challenges, and were often put in high stress state.Frequently being in stressful conditions while without appropriate alleviate would doubtless bring bad consequences to their physical and mental health. And this situation also presented s serious challenge for our psychologically healthy service personnels.According to the existing research, the improvement of emotion regulation, which aimed to increase the frequencies of the use of cognitive reappraisal, while decrease the use of expressive inhibition, could be conducive to improve stressful soldiers' emotional and mental health.Currently,it is still unclear how the ability of emotion regulation of soldiers from the PLA Rocket Force could be? what the characteristics of their emotion regulation style could be? Could educator improve the soldiers' emotional and mental health through the emotional regulation intervention? Therefore, the present study based on soldiers from the PLA Rocket Force, and explores 1.the characteristics of their emotion regulation style;2.the correlation between cognitive reappraisal, expressive inhibition and these soldiers' mental health;3.the beneficial effects of the emotional regulation intervention on improving soldiers' emotional and mental health. Methods:Study 1 Adopted Gross' s emotion regulation questionnaire on 1420 soldiers from the PLA Rocket Force to investigate the characteristics of their emotion regulation style.Study 2 adopted Connor-Davidson resilience scale,Chinese version of Ryff's psychological well-being scale, five facet mindfulness questionnaire, emotion regulation questionnaire, center for epidemiological survey, depression scale and self-rating anxiety scale to explore the correlation between cognitive reappraisal, expressive inhibition and these soldiers' mental health.Study 3 recruited 95 soldiers into the mindfulness-based emotion regulation intervention or the stress management education, test the cognitive reappraisal, expressive inhibition, psychological stress, depression, anxiety, positive and negative affect before and after the training to certify the positive effects of the mindfulness-based emotion regulation intervention on improving soldiers' mental health. All the data were put into the SPSS 19.0 and Amos to perform Pearson correlation analysis,independent-sample t test,one-way analysis of variance,paired-samples t test, repeated measures analysis of variance, and path analysis.Results:1.There were significant differences in cognitive reappraisal and expressive inhibition scores among different ages and different educational levels, soldiers under 20 years old or with high degree of educational attainment were prone to using cognitive reappraisal, and got lower scores on expressive inhibition subscale. The position levels of soldiers also affected their emotion regulation styles, compared with non-commissioned officers, the officers would take a less expressive-inhibition approach to regulate emotion.Besides, significant differences were discovered on cognitive reappraisal among soldiers with different adaptive statuses, those who were well adapted to the military environment were more prone to using cognitive reappraisal than others.2.The investigation of study 2 demonstrated that soldiers' emotional regulation styles were significantly correlated with their mental health.Soldiers who were more prone to using cognitive reappraisal would obtain less depression and anxiety, while those who adopted expressive inhibition more frequently would experience more mental distress.Meanwhile, soldiers' emotion regulation styles played partly mediating effect between the positive psychological traits, such as psychological resilience,well-being,mindfulness,and mental health.3.The repeated measures analysis of variance for mindfulness, cognitive reappraisal, psychological stress, anxiety, and negative affect revealed significant interactive effects of test time × groups.Concretely, the intervention group had significantly higher scores on mindfulness and cognitive reappraisal, and significantly lower psychological stress, anxiety, negative affect scores than the control group after the training.Besides, there was significant main effect of teat time, participants from both groups demonstrated significant lower level of expressive inhibition at post-test compared with pre-test.Based on all the results above, current research has several conclusions as follows:1.For those soldiers from the PLA Rocket Force, the abilities of regulating emotion were closely related to their ages, educational degrees, position levels and adaptive statuses. It is of great significance for our psychologically healthy service personnels to take these factors into emotion regulation training program.2.There were significantly correlation between emotion regulation styles and mental health among soldiers form the PLA Rocket Force.Soldiers with higher level of cognitive reappraisal and lower level of expressive inhibition demonstrated less symptoms of mental distress.3.The mindfulness-based emotion regulation intervention could effectively cultivate soldiers to use cognitive reappraisal more frequently and avoid adopting expressive inhibition, and help to alleviate their psychological stress and emotional distress, further promoting mental health.
