| Located in South Asia and surrounded by China and India,Nepal is a typical inland country.Owing to its small territorial area and less strong national strength, its national policy has always been under the influence of external forces. Before its independence,Nepal was a British colony. The country’s internal affairs and foreign policy were subject to the British control,so its foreign policy lacked the right to independence. After the independence of the country,Nepal has gained the initiative of the country’s diplomacy. In the face of the changing international situation and the current situation of domestic poverty, the Nepalese government has begun to gradually explore foreign policies which are conducive to national development and political stability.Since the Second World War,China and India,as two neighboring countries of Nepal, have gradually developed and become the two important economies in the world. The development and expansion of China and India have become an important consideration for Nepal’s foreign policy. Moreover, the Western countries led by the United States played an important role in the international community. They were also the object of the Nepalese government’s desire for assistance. After the independence of the country,it established a balanced diplomatic strategy based on the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence. While strengthening ties with Western powers, this kind of diplomatic balance strategy takes the balance of the development of relations with China and India as the main objective in order to seek the international community’s assistance for Nepal.Since then,Nepal could balance the development of relations with China and India. In addition,Nepal actively participated in international and regional cooperation, including politic, economy, diplomat and security, which changed the isolated diplomatic situation in the past and enhanced the diplomatic image of the country. All previous sessions of Nepal’s governments basically maintained a balanced diplomatic strategy, but the tendency of foreign policy at each stage was different. With the transformation of the international situation and the needs of national development,Nepal has gradually formed a strictly neutral balance of foreign policy. This simultaneous development with China-India relations and the initiative for the international community brought the stability, economic development and assistance from international community to Nepal.Nepal’s balanced diplomatic strategy is in line with its own national conditions and the needs of the international situation, which is conducive to the development of Nepal’s foreign policy and greatly increases the international influence of Nepal. |
