The ubiquitous media have a continuous and deep influence on the formation of gender, media shape the female image and male image conform to the "ideal". It guides the people in real life to imitate and change themselves. To a large extent, the media shape our gender. Therefore, this article start with a famous modern female periodicals founded by the Commercial Press??The Ladies' Journal, to discuss how it shaped the image of women, what kind of imitation model created for the women at that time, and what changes happened to the women in social life and social status.This article is divided into four parts: Firstly, it describes the Ladies' Journal's founding background, the development process, and analyzes its editors, authors and readers. Secondly, it introduces several typical female image in the Ladies' Journal, which including both traditional wife and mother, women of moral paragons image, and the representatives of new female as teachers and female students, etc., it is concluded that the general characteristics of women in this period is complicated, multivariate and transitional. Thirdly, it analyzed the causes of the formation of female image in the Ladies' Journal during the period of Republic of China, including women's own reasons and the influence from external environment. Finally, it analyzed the change in social life and social status of female in the period of Republic of China, and the root cause of the change: social transformation and the awakening of female subject consciousness.The Ladies' Journal across the May Fourth Movement, active in the field of women's enlightenment.It has rich content with distinctive characteristics of the times, not only before the May Fourth Movement under the shackles of feudal moral order, feminist liberation of "three from the four virtues", "wife and mother" type of enlightenment, but also the ideological influence of the new women's independence after the May Fourth Movement agitation. The reform and evolution course of The Ladies' Journal annotate the orbit of women from subordinate to self-reliance, from family to society. The history of Ladies' Journal can be said to be a microcosm of the entire Chinese women's movement. Profound changes in social life and social status of women in Republic of China took place. Their education, marriage, apparel and occupation have undergone tremendous changes. Transformation of society and the awakening of female subject consciousness make women from subordinate status to the independence gradually.
