Source of law, this term has a variety of explanations, including many different meanings, and does not have one particular definition. Thorough research of sources of law has already begun in 19 century, there were some investigations about sources of law during the Soviet Union; nowadays, the contemporary scientists also keep researching this problem. Our dissertation includes the research of gradual progress of the various sources of law during the Soviet Union legal system and the legal system of Russia after decay of USSR. We researched the period from 1917 year until 90's years. There are two time stages of research of development of legal sources:the first one is from 1917 to the end of 80's, the period of USSR. The second one studies the period from the end of 80's to the beginning of 90's, which was marked with the change of Constitution, and abandonment of socialism, admitting of pluralism, creating of President position, constitutional court and so on. The paper also sums up overall analysis of definition, development and functioning of the sources of law of Soviet Union and Russia. The paper also introduces analysis of the most important sources of law and the investigation of their interrelations and their important peculiarities. Finally, the paper studies the roots of changes of sources of law in Russia, here we analyzed the belongingness of Russian legal system, comparison between Roman law and Russian law, also investigated their common features and the distinctions of Russian sources of law.
