With the fast development of the Internet, the number of patients seeking healthcare via Internet is rising greatly.Aiming at entering China?s medical market to attract potential Chinese patients,HealthTap,an American mobile Internet Company providing online 24-hour medical inquiry services, entrusts Youdao human translation company to translate questions and answers(Q&As for short)between doctors and patients on its website.Patients are free to look through these translated Q&As and can register on its app for paid medical healthcare. The author participated in Youdao?s English-to-Chinese medical translation project with the workload over 80,000 words. The report takes Peter Newmark?s text typology theory as its theoretical basis to discuss translation methods applied in translation of the text.Newmark divides texts into three main categories according to their language functions, namely, expressive text, informative text and vocative text.He points out that expressive text should adopt semantic translation(ST),and informative and vocative texts adopt communicative translation(CT).The text is primarily equipped with both informative and vocative functions, with the features of being precise and professional in diction.Combing Newmark?s point of review, the author agrees that it is suitable to adopt communicative translation with the combination of semantic translation. The latter is adopted to ensure the feature of being precise and professional in diction and the former is adopted to make the translation smooth and easy to understand.Under the guidance the Newmark?s text typology, the report points out that communicative translation and semantic translation should be adopted together in translation of the text. The author presents specific translation methods through many examples from lexical and syntactical levels, hoping to provide reference for the translation of similar texts. At the same time, the author also points out some limitations in this translation project.
