A Report On Translation Of Understanding Unconventional Oil

The translation project is based on the translation of the paper entitled Understanding Unconventional Oil and analyzed from the perspective of communicative translation.Understanding Unconventional Oil is a paper which gives detailed description of the current condition of unconventional oil and provides policy recommendations for the stable development in the future.In view of Newmark’s text typology,the source text features information function.Thus the translation is guided and instructed by the strategy of communicative translation.The strategy emphasizes the effect on readers of target language and avoid the limit of word for word translation.In terms of the communicative translation,in order to achieve effective information transmission,the translator is supposed to pay attention to the communicative effect on the premise of faithfulness to the source text.The translation report is composed of 4 chapters.In the first chapter,the translator describes the translation project by stating its selection and value of the source text.The second chapter makes analysis on the source text from the perspectives of preparation,process and modification.In the third chapter,which is the main body of the report,the translator initially applies Newmark’s communicative translation to the translation of the petroleum text.Then the translator states its significance in directing the translation task in view of vocabulary,syntax and discourse,and finally sums up some translation skills employed in the course of the translation.The last chapter is the conclusion which summarizes the whole translation process and illustrates the reflection of the translator.The translator expects that the translation report could be helpful and valuable to the translation of types of science and technology texts.
