Different from ‘mental image’,‘verbal image’ refers to the ink and lines in the paintings and the words in the poems. When the artist creates, his choice of preferred verbal images is closely related to his aesthetic style.Unlike the traditional ‘uniform between poems and paintings’ which stresses the artistic conception’s uniform between poems and paintings and similar techniques, however, the uniform between poems and paintings at the verbal image level indicates that independent aesthetic significance are presented by the ink in the paintings and the words in the poems, both of which are new to display the painters’ minds,no longer the carrier for describing the images and creating artistic conception and create ‘images’ in high consistency.Rich in content,Xu Wei’s poems on paintings account for a quarter of his total poems, among which the most distinctive ones are landscape paintings and flower paintings drawn and inscribed by himself. In the aspect of verbal image,Xu Wei’s poems on paintings realize‘transferring the techniques applied in paintings into poems’ which is characterized by two features: transferring the way ink applies in paintings into poems and transferring the way brushwork applies in paintings into poems. At the ink level, the verbal image of ‘thick and heavy in colors’ presents the color images of poems on paintings are ‘big’ and ‘thick’;the verbal image of ‘vivid ink objects’ demonstrates the words of poems on paintings are appealing to all and sentences flexible. At the brushwork level,‘cursive script in painting’shows Xu Wei’s poems on paintings tend to chose irritating words, bringing a visual perception that is messy and wild like the cursive script;the verbal image of ‘expressing lilfelikeness by shadows’ tells the poems on paintings are inspired by blur and virtual shadows, creating a fuzzy and unreal analogy.Xu Wei invests strong emotions into his poems on painting, which become the symbols Xu Wei uses to directly reveal his inner moods and emotions. The text featured with ‘the sonagram combination’ comprised by Xu Wei’s poems and paintings has distinct features and is the integration of the verbal images of poems and paintings.By the involving way of ‘view and admire the horse from the poet’s standpoint’Xu Wei achieves the ‘true self’ in the art though he doesn’t realize his value in real life, leading the verbal image of the poems and paintings to the ‘expressionism’.What’s more,Xu Wei is fond of wielding his writing brush after drinking and creates at one stretch in animpromptu way without concerns.Xuwei’s paintings, poems, handwritings, strange arrangements for flowers, novel contents of poems and handwriting styles consistent with the paintings’ are interdependent, eventually, showing the verbal image’s aesthetic result of‘suddenly surprised by cold water in the back’.
