This is a translation of The Boy in the Cupboard, which is a book written by Shane Dunphy,a renowned tutor on childcare courses and a respectable commentator on child protection issues. He used to be a child protection worker and saw many children growing up in terrible situations.Stories of three children are included in the book. But this translation is just part of the story of Litovoi from Chapters 1,2,3,6,7,8,9,10 and Chapter 31,centering on the undocumented immigrants in Ireland, which is one of the hot issues in Europe and America. The author aims to give a comprehensive demonstration of the life of undocumented immigrants, particularly the psychological problems of the kids in those families. For one thing, the translation will arouse people's awareness of child protection and make the living situations of undocumented immigrants known to more people. For another,it can improve the translator's translation skills and cultural competence. The Boy in the Cupboard is an informative type of text and the communicative translation theory guides the whole translation practice. This report will study the translation strategies and skills employed in the translation practice. The key translation skills include adding, shifting, splitting and inversion. The translated version aims at reproducing the original text, expressing the author's ideas effectively and bringing target readers almost the same reading experience as its original readers do.
