Abstract/Summary:
Energy independence has always been a pursuit for every country.Hoping to copy the success of “Shale Gas Revolution” in America, many countries around the world invest to develop shale gas. However, with the further exploration of this energy source, people are worried about the incidental deterioration of the environment and the governments begin to implement a variety of regulations. As China,a country with abundant deposit of shale gas,is still at the initial stage of its development,we are expected to learn from other countries. In this case, the translation of shale-gas-related news becomes a very important channel for China to access all-round information from other countries. To ensure the same language style to the largest extent, the five pieces of news are all chosen from BBC.The science and technology news contains much abstract, professional and theoretical information. As postpositive attributive sentences are often employed and carefully structured, their translation constitutes one of the most demanding parts. Thus, the paper takes postpositive attributes as the research object. As is shown, these postpositive attributive sentences can be divided into four different types: the prepositional phrase, the adjective phrase, the non-finite form of verbs and the attributive clause.Nida’s Functional Equivalence theory holds that the purpose of translation is not literal equivalence but functional equivalence between the two languages, and translation should not stick to formal equivalence. On the basis of Nida’s theory, the paper studies how to apply inversion, division, combination, converting and synthesis to translate the English postpositive attributes in practice so that the translation is equivalent to the source text to the greatest extent.
