The Meaning Construction Of Fake N Construction Excerpted From COCA Under CRQ Framework

Fake N construction is a relatively special type in Adjective-Noun construction.The previous studies focus on three aspects?semantic study syntactic study,and cognitive study.Previous studies of Fake N construction under cognitive linguistics framework are limited to the analysis dissociative with culture(context),which rarely analyzes the meaning construction of Fake N with American English contexts being considered into consideration.This paper attempts to elucidate the meaning construction mechanism and its types of 1580 entries of Fake N constructions from the Corpus of Contemporary American(COCA)under the CRQ(Qualia Structure Based Cognitive Referencing)framework,which is formed by the Cognitive Reference Point Theory and Qualia Structure Theory.Cognitive referencing is the foundation of the meaning construction of Fake N construction,while the qualia structure theory structuralize the lexical information of the noun into four kinds of qualia roles: formal role,constitutive role,telic role and agentive role.In the process of constructing the meaning of Fake N,the conceptualizer invokes the concept of the noun as a reference point,and takes one of the four qualia roles of the concept of the noun as a starting target to construct the meaning of Fake N construction.The main contributions of this thesis are as follows:Firstly,this thesis expands the study Fake N construction to a context-related level.The integrated framework structures the attributes of the modified noun in Fake N construction into four qualia roles,which would rid the analysis of the arbitrariness of attributes description and makes the referencing process more systematic.Secondly,as of these four types meaning construction,American English users tend to negate the concept of N from the most essential part when constructing the meaning of Fake N construction(AW);and they are least inclined to formally deny the concept of N(FW).In the first type of Fake N construction,the American English users tend to firstly negate the constitutive role of the Fake-Nouns of concrete entity(CW).While in the second type the American English users tend to firstly negate the agentive role of the Fake-Nouns of abstract entity(AW).
