This report is the description of C-E Translation of twenty short essays on travel notes of the Ming and Qing Dynasties. This thesis sets out to analyze different techniques for translating specific words and sentences in short essays guided by Skopos theory Hans Vermeer raised. The study is based on the C-E translation of short essays in The Selected Short Essays of the Ming and Qing Dynasties by Ou Mingjun, the collection of 560 short essays by 115 masters such as Gui Youguang,Zhang Dai and Yuan Hongdao. The article discusses three key rules in Skopos theory that require translators to observe, namely skopos rule, fidelity rule as well as coherence rule.According to those rules, addition and omission are employed to translate some concretized expressions by metaphor, personification or other devices, while transliteration and annotation are applied in transfer of culture-loaded words. This research also proposes that conversion, together with inversion, can be used to translate dynamic sentences, while division and combination can be adopted to transfer run-on sentences. In view of the lexical and syntactic features of travel essays of the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the report discusses eight techniques for dealing with translation problems, which conform to the rules of skopos, coherence and fidelity in Skopos theory respectively. The study has certain reference value for the English translation of other short essays.
