This is a translation report of chapters 4 to 5 extracted from Default Semantics:Foundations of a Compositional Theory of Acts of Communication by Professor K.M.Jaszczolt.The excerpts are totally divided into six sections, which mainly focus on the application of default semantics to different English expressions and semantic phenomena. The excerpts cover the verbal analysis and the structure of propositional attitude, including the role of merger representations in the referential reading and attributive reading, the interpretation of referential mistakes and so on.The author takes the book as a selection of translation practice because it has greatly eased the debate on the boundaries of semantics and pragmatics in linguistics and also provided scholars with new directions of thinking. The difficulties in this translation practice for the author are the understanding of theoretical knowledge, difficult words and long sentences translation. The original text is a piece of semantic academic discourse with specialized words and a close-knit structure. The text is mostly composed of medium and long sentences as well as passive sentences. Therefore, the author employs the translation theory by Newmark, combining some translation methods, such as semantic extension, conversion, literal translation and changing voices,so as to make the translation smooth and concise and avoid translationese. From this translation practice, the author has realized the importance of preparation, especially for the translation of professional academic discourse like Semantics;otherwise the author can easily misunderstand the original text.Secondly, the author needs to study the translation several times from the perspective of the original author and target readers,so as to obtain more appropriate translations. In addition, the author should broaden the knowledge of various subjects.
