A Translation Project Report Of Default Semantics(2.1-2.5)

This is a project report on the translation of Part One of Default Semantics written by Kasia Jaszczolt,a professor from University of Cambridge.The sections of Part One of Default Semantics are as follows:2.1 Varieties of defaults;2.2 Cognitive defaults;2.3 Cultural and social defaults;2.4 Staying on the semantic track;2.5 Limitations,which include the varieties,origins and contents of defaults.As for social defaults and cultural defaults,the author also provides us with detailed explanation while covering the limitations of them.There is often a part to meaning in communication that comes neither from speakers’ delivering nor from hearers’ inferences.The author classifies the above communicated meaning into defaults with three burning problems including the definition of defaults,the relevance of default and context as well as the category of defaults.The author stays on the semantic track while introducing opinions of different schools and taking advantage of examples.So,the translation of this work is of practical significance,which lays a solid foundation for a better understanding of Linguistics,especially Semantics.The key point of translating this kind of work is to convey the content of the original texts.The diction of the original text,which is in the field of linguistics,is quite professional,and the majority of the sentences are long and complex.In the process of translating this work,the author encounters many difficulties and uses some corresponding translation solutions and strategies to them.The author has obtained many aspirations as follows:translators must get a better understanding of the background information related to the original texts before translation;in the process of translating,translators should take advantage of parallel texts and the Internet to convey the contents of the original text in a precise way;after completing the translation,the priority is given to proofreading to acquire the translation of excellence.
