| Alice Munro(1931-),Canadian writer,who won the Nobel Prize of Literature in2013,is honored as “master of the contemporary short story”.Most of her works are pictures of ordinary women’s lives in Canadian suburban towns and most are set in rural towns and their neighborhoods.This seemingly plain,delicate and elegant writing describes the subtlety hidden in every field of life,and also be more empathetic and resonating.Runaway,published in 2004,is a collection of eight short stories.It tells stories about the running-away experiences of women of different ages.The book won Munro the honor of the International Man Booker Prize in 2009.The quintessence of Deleuze and Guattari’s philosophy is that they want to help individuals to rid themselves of the confinements of capitalism by making use of Lines of Flight.They create many Lines of Flight,among which are Dismantling the Face,Deterritorilization,Becomings,Body without Organs and Repetition.The present thesis will apply the five Lines of Flight mentioned above to the interpretation of Alice Munro’s book Runaway,with five of the short stories as illustrations respectively.Carla,in the title story of the book,who is dependent on Clark economically and emotionally,cannot deterritorialize positively,fails to run away from him.Juliet in Chance,who is not exquisite in her studies but indulged in sex,becomes victim of her own Becomings.Grace in Passion,whose emotion is well beyond her reason,confined by the White Wall redundancies and limited in her Black Hole,can’t dismantle the Face.Juliet in Soon,who is driven by her wrong desires,with some mental organs disabled,and without correct judgment of values,becomes Empty Body without Organs.Robin in Tricks,who is blind to the Differences created by Repetition,loses her opportunity to marry Danilo.Characters in Alice Munro’s writings are of these shortcomings or those,that’s why they all fail to run away to gain their liberty.However,Munro does suggest that so long as we can overcome our disadvantages,which are independent in economy and emotion,resistant to what we are Becoming negatively,able to see Differences created by Repetition,with right values over desires,and reason over emotions,we can ultimately achieve our freedom. |
