A Research On The C-E Translation Of The GWRs Based On Stylistic Analysis

China has witnessed tremendous changes in the fields like politics,economics etc.since the 18 th National Congress of the People's Republic of China;such changes have attracted worldwide attention.As an official document of the Chinese government,the government work report(GWR)summaries the work done in the previous year and the work to be done in the coming year;it functions as one of the windows for other countries in the world to get a sound understanding of China in both political reform and economic development.As a typical political text,the GWR has a unique stylistic style.Many scholars paid much attention to identifying strategies for the C-E translation of the GWR while paying little attention to the researches on the styles of the original and the style-based translation.Taking the Nineteenth National Government Work Report and the Government Work Report as subject of research,the present thesis intends to examine the strategies for and practical approaches to the reproduction of the original text styles in the target text based on an in-depth analysis on the stylistic features at lexical,syntactic,and textual levels,as well as the stylistic markers of the original.The research shows that the GWR is different from the text of other genres in lexicon,syntactic features and texture.In terms of vocabulary,GWR frequently uses cultural-loaded words,political terms,and other professional terms.At syntactic level,the GWR uses large number of sentences with formulated patterns characterized by four-character clusters;it also uses unusually long complex sentences and the sentences without subjects.In terms of textual cohesion,the GWR primarily adopts references,substitution,and omission,etc.to perform cohesive function.The research also indicates that,in searching for the strategies for and approaches for stylistic reproduction of the original,semantic translation and communicative translation are to be adopted as translation strategies,and that literal translation,free translation,additional translation,foreignizing and substitution are to be accepted during practical translation.The research also proposes that,keeping communicative translation in mind,free translation,restructuring,passive-active conversion,and insertion of logic subjects be adopted for practical translation,and that literal translation,additional/omission,and substitution be adopted to form cohesive ties at textual level.The present research focuses its attention on exploring the strategies for and approaches to the representation of original styles in the target text of the GWR based on careful analysis and identification of stylistic features as well as their markers,in the hope of paving a basis and offering reference for the C-E translation of political texts of the same genre.
