Europeanization,as the name suggests, refers to changes in the vocabulary, grammar, and syntax of traditional Chinese that are influenced by the influence of European languages.Among them,English has the most profound influence. At that time, there was an assertion of Europeanization in the translation community and it was advocated to draw on the language strengths of the West under the call of“translation transformed Chinese” during the May 4th Movement.Xu Chi’s translation activities were affected by this large literary system. Therefore, the Europeanization of the translation is necessary and inevitable. The article is based on the corpus and guided by the translation norm theory of Toury using the quantitative and qualitative research methods, expounds the Europeanization phenomenon in Xu Chi’s translation of Walden and analyzes it in detail.Europeanization is mainly manifested in terms of vocabulary and sentence structure. This article examines from the perspectives of “yi + classifier” structure,BEI sentence,“shi…de” structure that indicating judgmental meaning, average sentence length of translation, attributive, etc.,and draws the following conclusions: the frequency of the“yi + quantifier” structure in the Xu Chi’s translation is 13,931 times per million words, which is higher than the 6355 times of the National Language Committee Corps and the9117 times in the Chen Weihuang’s study. The number of “bei” sentences in Walden was 761 words per million words, which was higher than the average of 692 words per million words of the “bei” sentence in the National Language Council Corpus and the Mandarin Chinese Corps of Xiamen University, and higher than that of the frequency of370 words per million words of Yang Guowen’s research.By analyzing the frequency of apperance of pragmatic structures of all the “bei” sentence sentences in the text,it can be concluded that there are 121 occurrences of the “bei+ verb” structure in Xu Chi’s version,it is mainly caused by the English passive structure “be + done”.The number of occurrences of the “shi...de” structure indicating the meaning of the judgment in the translation is 168 times per 100,000 words, which is higher than Lancaster’s nativeChinese corpora and Zhejiang University’s translation corpus by an average of 43 times and 53 times per 100,000 words. The average sentence length of the self-built corpus is 50.25 words/sentence,which is higher than the 45.15 word/sentence of the National Language Committee Corps corpus, and is also higher than the average sentence length of the original Chinese modern literary works by Zhang Zhining. The total number of occurrences of the word “de” in Xu Chi’s translation of Walden by searching is 9,941 times, and it is the most frequent word in the entire translation. The word “de” is the most significant sign of the attributive, and the large use of the word “de” can be said to be an indicator of Europeanization. The detailed data obtained through analysis is compared with the reference corpora, and examples are analyzed against the source text. The final result is that there is a clear Europeanization in the Xu Chi’s version of Walden. This is the result of a combination of factors, such as the background, educational experience, and the purpose of translation of Xu Chi.
