As one of the varieties of scientific texts, popular science is the combination of literature and science, which aims at popularizing the scientific knowledge to the public. With the unfolding of the current fourth translation climax of China, the work of translation of the popular science has become more and more active.Afterwards,a large number of excellent foreign popular science works have been introduced into China and have played a vital role in promoting scientific knowledge in China. However, behind the prosperity of translation of popular science, the translation problems resulting from Europeanization are increasingly highlighted. At present, the studies on Europeanization in translation of popular science are a rarity. Therefore, this study will further enrich the related studies on Europeanization. This study focuses on Europeanization in the translation of popular science.Statistics and status analysis of Europeanization in the translation of popular science are conducted by contrasting two self-constructed corpora(TCSPC & OCPSC).On this basis, the major Europeanization features reflected in translated popular science are summarized.Furthermore, the major factors accounting for the differences in Europeanization degree between the two corpora are also explored. The major findings can be briefly concluded as follows: Firstly,at the lexical level,Europeanization in the translated popular science works is reflected in affixation and increasing usages of quantifier, conjunction, preposition, auxiliary and pronoun.Secondly,at the syntactical level,Europeanization in translated popular science mainly involves the growth of declarative sentence and “被” sentence, amelioration of “被” sentence and the decrease of “把” sentence.Thirdly, among the 18 Europeanization items examined in this study,OCPSC only reflects higher Europeanization degree on two items except insignificant difference in one item.In general, the Europeanization degree in TCPSC is higher than that in OCPSC.The possible causes for the difference can be attributed to the overuse of literal translation methods and the neglect of proper Chinese way of expressions.Based on aforementioned research findlings, some related suggestions are profferd for translation practice and translator training. |
