The Study On The English Version Of 2017GWR From The Perspective Of Functionalism

The annual Chinese government work report(hereinafter short for GWR or the report)covers many crucial aspects of the development of China,which involve politics,economy,culture,livelihood,military and diplomacy etc..As the most representative and formal political document,GWR is an authoritative and authentic information source where the western world can accurately know about the current China's situation and relevant important policies as well.Consequently,the translation of GWR plays a decisive role in Sino-western communication and cooperation.Indeed,some scholars have studied English rendition of GWR,and obtained plenty of instructive experience in translation practice.However,more often than not,they mostly introduce individual translation experiences,and mainly focus on the comparative analysis of different English translation versions with the corresponding source text.They do not probe into the unique characteristics of the GWR as the interfering factors that result in translation obstacles.And they do not explore effective translation strategies and solutions to them.In view of the above situation stated,under the guidance of the functionalist approach,researches are conducted on the translation of GWR by taking the latest English version of 2017 GWR for model.From the levels of lexicon,syntax and discourse,this thesis discusses and examines the English translation of GWR on the basis of functional translation approach,primarily eliciting function,text typology and skopostheorie.In addition,it analyzes the major barriers affecting the translation of the report,and summarizes the applicable translation principles and effective translation strategies by selecting some English versions as the typical and representative examples.It is suggested that using these translation principles,devices and strategies appropriately in translation of GWR can help transmit the connotations of the original information in the target text,and ensure that the translated version is consistent with the source text.It is also suggested that this study will contribute to translating GWR and other similar political documents as reference.
