Abstract/Summary:
With Rapid expanding of video game around the world, foreign video games are pouring into Chinese market.Game localization is becoming more and more important, and the quality of game translation has become an important factor that affects the acceptance of foreign games in the Chinese market. This study is based on Nida’s functional equivalence theory. The localization of hearthstone is selected as a case study, and the characteristics of game translation are summarized in this study.A questionnaire survey of game texts is conducted to gain the player’s preferences and tendencies in game translation, and the common problems in game translation are analyzed.Such as the loss of cultural connotation in translation, the content deviation of the text, even simple machine translation and other issues.these problems affect the quality of the game localization and the game experience of the player. This study finds that the cause of the above problems is a lack of research on the theory and practice of game localization. The development of the game localization is still in the initial stage and the guidance of the mature method is insufficient. The corresponding countermeasures are put forward: Taking free translation as the main supplement, literal translation as the supplement, paying attention to the transmission of information.Taking domestication as the main factor and foreignization as the supplement, priority should be given to the equivalence of functions.Using transliteration as few as possible, and use Transcreation to express the original intention.Using concise language,to ensure suitable reading rhythm. The translator should personally experience the plot of the game and accurately reproduce the cultural core of the game.
