As the globalization continues to accelerate, cooperation and communication among different countries are becoming increasingly frequent. In this context, interpreting,as an important form of communication, has attracted a lot of attention. As the first spokesman the leaders of a country, represent the country's image. The speeches given by country leaders on international occasions convey the country's ideas and attitude. Therefore,Speeches of state leaders have become an important platform for diplomacy,as well as a significant means for foreign news media to learn more about the economy, policy and culture. The speech has been widely regarded as an important form of communication. However, the quality of speech interpreting directly relates the country's attitude and principle to convey accurately. This thesis made a analysis, taking the examples of President Xi Jinping's two international speeches, discussed the guiding function of Relevance Theory in interpreting practice, and summed up the proper interpreting strategies to achieve optimal relevance. This thesis will study the explanatory power in interpreting practice from the perspective of Relevance Theory. The Relevance Theory was developed by Dan Sperber and Deirdre Wilson. The research proposes that the process of speech interpreting is a two-way ostensive-inferential process which involves the speaker, the interpreter and the audience. On the one hand, the speaker needs to express his or her information intention and the interpreter should find the optimal relevance of the utterance and the contextual assumption to infer the communicative intention of the speaker; On the other hand, the interpreter should interpret the information to audiences by combining the cognitive context with appropriate interpreting strategies.According to Relevance Theory, humans tend to pursue maximum cognition with minimum effort. As for the interpreters, they need to build enough cognitive contexts and reduce unnecessary efforts in the process of interpreting. This thesis proposes some strategies with examples, such as addition, omission, free interpreting and analogy etc.The author hopes that this study can help interpreters better grasp the nature of interpretation, and make the best choice of words. The author also hopes that this thesis can provide reference in similar interpretation practice.
