Use Of Parallel Texts In English Translation Of China-specific Political Expressions

As the fast developing China is attracting growing attention around the world,English translation of Chinese political texts is playing an increasingly important role in introducing to the world China's national profile and communicating with a larger international audience.Chinese political texts usually contain China-specific political expressions,whose proper translation into other languages,or English in the case discussed in this thesis,becomes an issue to be studied as how they are translated directly affects their communication and understanding.Based on a case study of the English translation of The CPC Leadership Holds the Key to China's Development using the English translation of Xi Jinping: The Governance of China(Foreign Languages Press,Beijing,2014)as a parallel text,this thesis discusses the strategies and principles of using parallel texts in English translation of China-specific political expressions,and how parallel texts may help a proper and consistent rendering of such expressions.Six strategies and principles are concluded in this thesis: consistency,literal rendering,liberal rendering,acceptance in the target language culture,addition of background information,and proper style.
