Strategies Of Translating One Million Steps

War non-fiction is based on the writers' experiences and interviews,through which readers are acquainted with related war facts.In recent years,more and more books of war non-fiction have been published in China,many of them translated from English ones.The author,as one of the translators of One Million Steps: A Marine Platoon at War,found that the popularity of war non-fiction with readers is unbalanced with the lack of academic research on their Chinese translation.When translating One Million Steps into a Chinese war non-fiction,the author found it difficult to accurately transfer the military expressions.According to the text typology theory,war non-fiction belongs to both informative texts,whose main function is to provide facts and knowledge,and expressive texts,which involve the writer's emotions and attitudes.Therefore,in translating such texts,the translator should follow the principle of accurately transferring the war-related information while being as expressive as the source texts.Through analyzing the original and final translation of One Million Steps,the author found that: the translator should verify the Chinese expression of military information by making use of online resources and materials;use short sentences in Chinese in stead of following the English sentence pattern with an “insertion” structure;try to make clear the narrative perspectives.Meanwhile,the author should flexibly reproduce the expressiveness anticipated by the writer on the sour text readers in the target language,as well as imitating the characteristics of military code names and soldiers' conversations on the battlefield.
