The significance and meaning of directional complement and the frequency of its usage determines its importance in the Chinese grammar.Based on the characteristics of the complement itself,this research analyzes and discusses the occurrence of the "up and down" types of complements from the perspective of cognitive linguistics by means of questionnaires,corpus collection and chart analysis.In this work we analyze "upper","come up","go up","get up","lower","come down","go down" and other forms of directional complements while we also go into the error analysis found on this premise as committed by foreign students.We have collected a large number of "upper and lower" directional complement data,and the cognitive linguistic image schema,categorization theory,metaphor mechanism,theory and interlanguage and error analysis theory will be combined with the corpus questionnaire which will be used in the work.This research analyzes the characteristics of the directional complement by summarizing the basic situations leading to errors,and then from the perspective of cognitive linguistics relating to the "upper and lower" class of complement provides some teaching methods and recommendations.The whole thesis has two aspects of cognitive linguistics and directional complement,but also with a comprehensive study with which we stand on the basis of the existing work and exploration,in order to improve the efficacy of teaching directional complement to foreigners learning Chinese.
