Many studies have found that the operation of certain body part will influence language comprehension, but not all of the operations of a body can promote the language understanding. This role is conditional and targeted. However existing studies only discussed isolated words or sentences, but not the overall article. They also only discussed the input stage of the body operation, but not the output stage. This study investigated the impact of three different hands’ operations(including the distance between hand and the reading material;hand waving;do or remember hand gestures)in understanding different kind of language materials(including details or the overall comprehension questions, scene conversion or not, specific or abstract words). And the language materials are placed in the whole discourse context under strict control for the overall comprehension.First,we assessed and matched textual material, and then asked participants to read text material and fill in the blanks orperform the judgment. The first study found that when people read with hands on the back of the body, the overall effect was helpful in understanding the global information of article. The second study found that waving hand could help us to understand the scene switching in the article, and the hand waving could update the situation model. The third study found that we could recall more verbs with extracting meaningful hand gestures. And compared with the abstract words, the method of using hand gestures to improve the memory effect is more suitable for the specific words. In summary, the results of the experimental study of the above three, there are some corresponding relation between the hand and language.Based on the consistency of the hand gestures and the language material,we can use the specific hand operation as a kind of Embodiment-Based Learning Strategy to help language understanding and improve our memory.
