English reading is one of the most important questions under discussion for adults' English learning at present. How to enhance English reading proficiency, quality and skills is a vital problem for English teaching in Chinese middle schools and colleges. "Cognition-Knowledge Bilingual Double Structures" proposed by professor Yin Demo has a particular significance in understanding English learning and solving problems in English learning (especially in English reading comprehension). On the basis of theoretical analysis and experimental studies, this thesis explores adults' English reading from the view of "Cognition-Knowledge Bilingual Double Structures". The thesis can be divided into six parts. Chapter one is a brief introduction of the thesis, which explained the reasons for the study and research methods, and the overall structure of this study. Chapter two reviewed learning strategies and reading strategies. Besides definitions and classifications of learning strategies, definitions, significance and classification of reading and reading strategies are also discussed in this chapter. Differences between reading strategies and that between reading strategy use for higher level English readers and lower level English readers are also explored in chapter two. Chapter three explained the theoretical basis for adults' foreign language reading. Contents of the theory of "Cognition-Knowledge Bilingual Double Structures (CKBDS)" and its explanation and analysis for the learning mechanism for adults' foreign language reading are briefly introduced. An experimental study is carried out in Chapter four, which includes research purpose, research procedure, data collection and analysis, as well as research findings and results of analysis. Chapter five is about the reading strategies teaching and training in the guidance of CKBDS theory, which reviews the relevant studies first, and then suggests how to train readers to be strategic. Chapter six includes implications and conclusion, such as suggestions for future English reading teaching practice in this thesis and designation for future studies and some limitations of this thesis.Research findings from theoretical analysis and experimental studies are as follows:1. Adults' English reading will be influenced by their native language. Knowledge structure and cognition structure for adults' native language are comparatively mature and in foreign language reading, their foreign language knowledge structure and cognition structure will receive positive and negative influences from native language unavoidably.2. In the learning process of English reading, adults' dependence on native language will reduce as their English reading proficiency rises.
