A Report On Translation Of Back On The Fire (Part One)

Human beings,nowadays,tend to spare no efforts to extract natural resources in pursuit of economic growth,which leads to a series of ecological problems.In such a serious situation,it becomes increasingly important to arouse people's ecological awareness by developing eco-literature and drawing lessons from the excellent works on eco-literature from other countries.This report is based on the translator of first part of Back on the Fire,written by Gary Snyder,an American poet,essayist,translator,Zen Buddhist,environmentalist,and one of the most prolific writer of the Beat Generation.Snyder was deeply influenced by Oriental culture.His works is of unique style of writing,which mirrors his rational thinking on ecological and natural issues.The translation of his works,hence,will in a way provide reference for Chinese ecological literature.This paper consists of the following three chapters.The first chapter is an introduction of Gary Snyder and his works Back on the Fire,as well as Eugene Nida's dynamic equivalence theory;Chapter Two is a description of the translation process,including the work before,during and after translation;the last chapter is a case study of the difficulties in terms of words and sentences encountered during translation,as well as the solutions to these difficulties.On the basis of Nida's dynamic equivalence theory,the translator conducts an analysis of the translation methods of culture-loaded words and long sentences,and takes the differences between Chinese and English languages into consideration.Annotation is employed to deal with the words translation;and translation techniques such as addition,division and free translation are applied to translate long and complex sentences.This report,based on the writer's practical experience,hopefully will be beneficial to the researchers or translators concerned,and provide reference for academic research on eco-literature translation.
