A Translation Practice Report Of Low-temperature Thermochronology: Techniques,interpretations,and Applications(Chapter One And Chapter Two)

In recent years,with the strengthening trend of globalization,scientific and technological exchanges among countries have increased in frequency.For the purpose of developing science and technology of our country,scientific workers should be familiar with the international latest dynamic state of science and technology in time through various channels,and learning from other countries' research articles is a widely used and effective way.Therefore,the requirements of texts of science and technology translation in our country are increasing continuously with a broad market prospect.In such situation,based on the first and second chapter of Low-Temperature Thermochronology: Techniques,Interpretations,and Applications which is the volume 58 of Reviews in Mineralogy & Geochemistry,a scientific literature published by mineralogical society of America,this English-Chinese translation practice report is completed.As the main content of the translation practice material,low-temperature thermochronology is the frontier of geochronology research in recent years.Foreign countries began to study the thermochronology dating methods in the 1960 s while our country started relatively late.In view of this,the translation practice may provide an advisable learning material to geological workers and students to help them get useful information from foreign countries' research.As a text of science and technology,the translation practice material has its own specific characteristics.The translator chooses Skopos Theory that is applicable for scientific translation as the guidance to solve the problems in translation process through various methods with the help of Three Principles of Skopos Theory.This report consists of five parts.The first part is translation task description containing the content of source text,the requisition of the translation task,the purpose and the significance of the translation task.The second part divides the translation process into pre-translation preparation,translation stage and translation correction,and the respective descriptions are made.The third part and the fourth part are the core contents of this report.The third part reveals those problems in the translation process by analyzing and separating them into two kinds,one is on the professional knowledge level the other is on the text linguistic level.The fourth part gives translation strategies and typical cases analysis for the revealed problems.Following the Skopos Rule,with the help of professional software,parallel texts,professional field and context the translator solves the problems on the professional knowledge level.Then following the Fidelity Rule,the translator solves the objectivity problems of sentential form on the text linguistic level.There are two ways.One is transforming sentence constituents according to the dynamic and static difference between English and Chinese,and the other is transforming sentential form according to the active and passive difference between English and Chinese.At last,under the guidance of Coherence Rule,the translator solves the syntactic and discourse problems on the text linguistic by two ways.The first one is adjusting sentence structure according to the hypotactic and paratactic difference between English and Chinese,and the second one is transforming cohesive devices according to the cohesive difference between English and Chinese.The fifth chapter is about the translator's thinking and personal experience of the translation process.
