A Study Of Two English Versions Of Company Law Of PRC From The Perspective Of The Skopos Theory

With the entering of China into WTO and the quick development of globalization influencing all over the world,legal translation has become a flourishing field over the last three decades in translation studies in China despite the fact that the translation of legal field is still confronted with many obstacles.Company Law of the People s Republic of China can regulate the establishment and activities of companies,as well as maintain market order,so the translation of Company Law is also a crucial part in the legal translation.Company Law is revised in 2013,but the study of its English versions is rare.Therefore,this thesis will focus on the two existing versions of Company Law.And the research questions are:what are the merits and demerits of the two translations?How can the quality of the two translations be evaluated and further improved?The thesis endeavors to make a study of two English versions of Company Law of the People's Republic of China from the perspective of the skopos theory.The study attempts to employ the research method of discourse analysis to compare and evaluate the two translations from the aspects of lexicon,syntax,and discourse,as well as explore the merits and demerits of the two translations.It aims to further promote the translation quality and translation acceptance,and push forward the cross-cultural communication in the legal sphere.The thesis finds that,firstly,the two versions do have their own advantages and disadvantages in terms of the three aspects,but generally speaking,there is a need to further improve the translation quality of the two versions;secondly,the skopos theory is helpful in the judgment of merits and demerits as well as the construal and solution of some legal translation problems.Simultaneously,some main concepts specified in the functionalist approach,such as the purpose,the addressees,the.situation and culture of the acceptance,and so forth,have directive significance in the improvement of the translation quality of the two versions.The study of the English versions of Company Law can not only enrich legal translation,but also shed some light on the translation of other legal texts.
