Verschueren is a Belgian scholar who first proposes the adaptation theory.This theory points out that the use of language belongs to a course of choice-making and adaptation.The translator needs to make a lot of choices and adaptations to finish translating the work.Gone with the Wind is a masterpiece,which has so many Chinese versions.Many scholars applied various translation theories to the analysis of the Chinese versions,but few people did the research from the perspective of adaptation theory.Therefore this thesis will analyze the Chinese version of this novel under the framework of adaptation theory.This thesis elaborates on the theoretical framework of the adaptation theory from three angles:making choices in language using,three properties of language and four aspects of pragmatic investigation.Based on that,the author does an in-depth analysis on the Chinese version of Gone with the Wind in four angles:contextual correlates of adaptability,structural objects of adaptability,dynamics of adaptability and salience of adaptability.On the basis of the analysis of the examples taken from the Chinese version,the author of this thesis makes a conclusion that the successful translation should be the adaptation to the process of contextual correlates of adaptability,structural objects of adaptability,dynamics of adaptability and salience of adaptability.What's more,the adaptation theory has a practical value for the literature translation,and its application in translation provides a new method for translation study.
