A Study Of Characteristics Of Farmer Paintings In Fujian

As a significant component of folk art,farmer painting is a wonderful treasure in the realm of the world's culture and art.The definition of the discussed 'farmer painting' is more specific and precise in this dissertation in terms of the selection of creation subjects in paintings,especially referring to those folk artists who identify themselves as farmers.They create art works on the basis of the lives and experiences that they are familiar with by using pens,knifes,and scissors etc.Taking root in indigenous culture,Fujian's farmer paintings have already taken a place nationally with their unique features.Since 1950s,farmer painting activities began to appear in Fujian,and it was during the mid-1980s to the late 1990s,Fujian farmer paintings achieved prosperity.Many districts in Fujian were awarded as the "Town of Modern Chinese Folk Paintings" by the Ministry of Culture in succession such as Tong' an in Xiamen,Xiang'an,Jinjiang in Quanzhou,Longhai in Zhangzhou and Zhangping in Longyan.This dissertation mainly focuses on analyzing the regional characteristics of farmer paintings in the above-mentioned painting towns and explore their regional artistic styles.This dissertation firstly begins with the developing process of Chinese farmer paintings.Taking Fujian's unique rural areas with farmer paintings as an example,it sums up the origin and developing status and shows the general situation of Fujian farmer paintings.Secondly,it explores the influencing factors of the surviving environment of Fujian farmer paintings.On the one hand,the distinctive advantaged natural environment of Fujian influences the formation of Fujian's unique maritime civilization and provides the local farmers with valuable art creation materials.On the other hand,the folk culture and architectural style of Fujian and other socio-environmental factors has a close and internal relationship with the developing trend of farmer paintings.Furthermore,the regional characteristics of farmer paintings' artistic styles in Fujian are discussed and analyzed from several aspects including themes,styles,and creativities etc.,which demonstrates the distinct art and cultural value of Fujian's farmer paintings,proceeding from the exterior to the interior and layer to layer.This study of Fujian farmer painting has systematically sorted out the developmental process and present situation of farmer paintings in Xiang'an and Tong'an in Xiamen,Longhai in Zhangzhou,Jinjiang in Quanzhou,and Zhangping in Longyan etc.,which contributes to the exploration of the history and culture of Fujian farmer paintings and the protection and inheritance of intangible cultural heritage.
