Mrs.Spring Fragrance is Sui Sin Far's only published volume."In the book the passion she reveals illustrates that she stands with her Chinese mother, instead of her British father" is the review on Montreal Daily Witness in 1912,which still counts today. However, this work is rarely known by people and there is no Chinese version on the market. Therefore, two short fictions in Mrs.Spring Fragrance are chosen as the objective of this translation practice.Mrs.Spring Fragrance is an early Chinese American work, describing the lives of the first Chinese Americans. In this fiction, dialogues take up a significant position and enjoy particular features, with dialogues taken place both between Chinese and between Chinese and Americans,as the early lives of Chinese Americans have deeply integrated in American community.Apart from dialogues, letters, poems, official documents and prayers all appear in the novel, highlighting the mixed and colorful lives of Chinese Americans and enriching the character features.Besides, descriptive texts, with long and complicated sentences, are abundant in this novel. The above-mentioned three kinds of important and difficult translation aspects fall into the three variables of register theory. Therefore, this practice is conducted by a detailed register analysis of source text from the perspective of field, tenor and mode, with register markers its indicators to how it guides the translation,to establish the corresponding register in the translated text.In terms of field, text is divided into literary text and non-literary text. And an official document and a letter are elaborated to show how field directs the translation of non-literary text. With regard to tenor,it is of great importance to make dialogue in conformity with the role of relationship of participants. For example, grammatically simple Chinese expressions should be employed while translating the dialogue between a Chinese and an American. And sentence reconstruction, division of complicated sentences and other translation methods are adopted to translate long, complicated sentences from the perspective of mode.It is hoped that background of the novel, character images and their conflicts could be revived to give Chinese readers the most original, authentic and immersive lives of the first Chinese Americans under the guidance of register theory.
