Split And Resurrection

Chang Tsochi is a crucial director who participates in and witnesses the development of Taiwanese movies.He began to work as an assistant director in the 1980 s and independently directed movies in the 1990 s.For thirty years since then,he has been constantly engaging in movie creation.He is one of the few Taiwanese directors who have been recognized by international film festivals and who have aroused the attention of local audience and benefits from the market.Chang Tsochi considers that he comes from the underclass,so he often described the daily life of underclass in his movies.The characters in his films generally have to face with “death”.In the early period,Chang often set up a fantasy plot of “resurrection” at the end of his films to overturn previous keynote of being onlookers of reality;Later,more and more nonlinear memory fragments occurred in his works,causing uncertain narrations,especially death time,and even the uncertainty in the boundaries of inner fantasies and physical reality.He also designed a lot of contrasting characters.Through the touch of death,the characters split up,integrate and coexist.The differences in these contrasting characters also reflect the complicated gender and ethnic issues in Taiwan.He challenges the sole truthfulness through spliting up and resurrection,and achieves the decomposition of central-marginal structures.Currently,the studies on Chang Tsochi lack the mastery of overall works context.Besides,they are mostly done by Taiwanese scholars and few researchers from Mainland China focus on this field.This study tries to fill in the gap.It is hoped that more studies will be conducted on Chang Tsochi’s works and Taiwanese films.
