Metaphor,which is ubiquitous in language,has a long history,dating back to as early as Aristotle.During this two thousand years,people's understanding of metaphor has experienced the Comparison View,the Substitution View,the Interaction View and the Conceptual View,and the function of metaphor has shifted from the rhetorical tool to cognitive tool.Until the Conceptual Metaphor Theory was put forward by Lakoff in the 1980 s,the essence of metaphor as a cognitive tool was revealed.At present,cognitive metaphor has got the multi-disciplinary support and validation.In recent years,metaphor researchers have come to realize the teaching function of metaphor,and began to study metaphor in terms of applied linguistics,which is regarded as an important research focus and direction of cognitive linguistics.And the research of this thesis was just based on this need.This thesis can be divided into three steps.Firstly,this thesis summarized the development of metaphor theory,which includes the Comparison Theory,the Substitution Theory,the Interaction Theory and the Conceptual Theory.Based on those theories,the thesis explained the mechanism of semantic mapping,then analyzed three categories of semantic—structural metaphor,ontological metaphor and orientational metaphor,and proposed three characteristics of metaphor: universality,nationality and systematicity.All of these have laid a solid theoretical support for the construction of this paper.Secondly,this paper explained the theoretical foundation of English linguistics,cognitive psychology and constructivist teaching theory,in order to provide application metaphor theory to teaching.Last is the practical demonstration of metaphor theory.Focusing on vocabulary,the basic elements,this thesis separated vocabulary into single words,chunks and idioms,then made an analysis of the mechanism of radical expansion with mapping theory,and an explanation of meaning integration of chunks and idioms with semantic collocation,so as to explain the cognitive metaphor teaching strategies in detail.All in all,metaphorical cognition teaching strategy in this thesis aimed to enrich vocabulary teaching method,and proposed a new perspective for teaching and learning.In the aspect of teachers,this paper could provide operable teaching examples for applying metaphor into practice.In the aspect of students,this paper might offer students certain guidance.In addition,this paper could help to change the classroom teaching practice,and improve the current vocabulary teaching situation in China.However,this thesis was only a preliminary exploration and attempt.And more thorough,scientific and practical metaphorical teaching method remains to be further studied by scholars and English teachers.
