It has been more than one hundred years since Shakespeare's plays' first landing in China.Critics have attached great importance to Shakespeare's plays' translation, especially the literariness of translation. However,Shakespeare's plays are dramas which have both literariness and performability.Besides,Shakespeare wrote plays for performance in the first place. It is incomplete to assess the plays' translation quality without the consideration of performability. Moreover, critics tended to assess the translation quality in an impressionistic way, which lacks scientific and systematic guidance to make the assessment more rational. An objective and scientific system is needed. From the perspective of register theory and the stylistics of drama, this paper attempts to build a translation quality assessment model for Shakespeare's plays with Halliday's register theory, discourse marker and turning-taking as its theoretical basis. This model consists of two branches which are named “the mismatches between the source text and the target text” and “quantity analysis of performability parameters”.Parameters are set respectively on the theoretical basis and the features of Shakespeare's plays.According to the set parameters, the source text and the target texts are analyzed separately. Then the target texts are compared with the source text and assessed based on their mismatches with the source text. The closer they are,the higher scores the target text gets. The English and Chinese versions of Measure for Measure,a Shakespeare's play, are used to test the feasibility of this model to assure that a rational and operational model to assess the quality of Shakespeare's plays is built.
