Liu Heng is a contemporary Chinese writer with distinctive creative features. This article tries to start from the text of Liu Heng’snovels, combing and studying the theme and artistic characteristics of the works, which are after the mature period of his,so as to evaluate the unique ideological value and research value.Liu Heng focuses on human psychological trauma and he believes that the early psychologicaltrauma experience will be projected to the future life of individual life choicesand affect their life trajectory. In addition, human life is in the individual’s natural and social attributes of the contradictions and fights.Living in the world is constantly in the pursuit of desire, which can never be satisfied,so the human is inevitably imprisoned in the plight of survival. The end of desire is death and no one can escape the fate of death,so Liu Heng believes that life is an inevitable tragedy. In describing the plight of human survival and desire to entangle,Liu Hengalways tries to use almost naturalistic bold and calm writing language to narrate. This is determined by the identity of the characters he described and the cruel narrative themes.Liu Heng created a series of real characters, which are full of flesh and blood. He is good at using psychoanalysis techniques to dissect the alienation of spiritualdetails and concerned about spiritual difficultiesof the "nobodies".His characters have a universal sense of painfulness, which general public will face,so they are particularly real.Liu Heng is also skilled in using dream to show the subconscious of the characters, which is to show more three-dimensional desire and reality of human’s devourment. In addition,Liu Heng’s novel has the characteristics of looming social background. He deliberately obscuresthe social history and culture backgrounds of his novels, which is to focus and highlight people and human nature. There is a compassionate and humanitarian concern for the individual’s lifein Liu Heng’s novels, which come from his own growth experience. In the early 1980 s,Liu Hengstudied a series of Western philosophical works, which also influenced his creation,so that he had a deeper understanding of desire, death and fate. However,Liu Heng’s novels also have some limitations, because he focused obsessively on the pain of life, ignoring the subjective initiative and beauty of life, which is easy to fall into pessimism.
