A Study Of Poetic Ideas In The Six Dynasties Of Hu Yinglin’s Shi Sou

As the great master of Poetry Criticism in the middle and late Ming Dynasty,Hu Yinglin is qualified to judge the poems of the early and middle Ming Dynasty.Although belongs to the retrospective group,Hu learns from the ancients in an easy-going way of combination,which enables him to epitomize the thoughts of the poetry.Being rich in the content and strict in the structure,Shi Sou judges the poetry of the Six Dynasties in a detailed and logical way.At the poetry history part,the book talks about the development of the poetry and also analyses the achievements of the poets;while at the poetry style part,the book mainly tells us the changes of all the style of the verse.Taking the style of the verse as a main line,Hu expresses his point at the basement of the ancients.Taking the poetry of Tang Dynasty as a goal,he also judges the achievements of the poets’ behavior of inheriting and learning from the ancients,which proves that the poetry of the Six Dynasties has a great affection of the Tang dynasty’s poetry.From Hu’s concept of “wenzhi” and “fengshen”,we can know that he is a supporter of the ancient verse style and a follower of the elegant taste of the Tang dynasty’s poetry,which is popular with the poetry learners because of its target and clear objects.But it also weakens the beauty and the personality of the Six Dynasties.Combining and comparing the concepts of the poetry of the four books,which includes Shi Sou,Yi Yuan Zhi Yan,Shi Yuan Bian Ti,Shi Jing Zong Lun,Hu inherits Wang Shizhen’s theory.In the judgments of the poems and poets of the Six Dynasties,Hu and Wang have many in common.Compared with Shi Yuan Bian Ti,Shi Sou is less meticulous but more comprehensive in content.Shi Sou emphasizes the charm and the taste,and is the development of the ancient poetry criticism.No matter on appreciation of beauty or the creating of the poems,Shi Sou is a masterpiece of the ancient poetry criticism.Although Hu regards the Six Dynasties’ poetry as a low point,he shows us the situation of the reception of the Six Dynasties,which is a supplement of the poetry history.Systematically probing into Shi Sou,the dissertation is able to comprehensively master the evaluations on poets and poems in the Six Dynasties,and to further explore the poetic views held by Hu Yinglin.The analysis of the poetic view in the Six Dynasties reflected in Shi Sou can,through the comparison between Hu Yinglin’s poetic views about the Six Dynasties and the contemporaries,understand its inheritance and development which is based on predecessors.In the meantime,the dissertation also discloses Hu’s limitation of criticisms on poems in the Six Dynasties under the direction of literary restoration theories.
