Xi'an is a sample city in the northwest of China. In recent years, many activities, such as Euro-Asia Economic Forum and 2011 Xi'an Expo attract more foreigners to come here for work, study, tour, etc. However, there still exist many errors in English versions of public signs in Xi'an,which not only gives some inconveniences to international friends, but also makes Xi'an have a bad international image. Therefore,it is necessary to apply a proper translational theory to guide the C-E translation of public signs. The Eco-translatology wasproposed by Professor Hu Gengshen, which attaches importance to adaptation and selection in the process of translation.Adaptation focuses on the translational eco-environment which includes various elements while selection is achieved by multi-dimensional transformation focusing on the transformation in linguistic, cultural, and communicative dimensions between a source text and its target text.In other words,a suitable target text is the result of a translator'sachieving multi-dimensional adaptation and selective transformation in at least three dimensions. The thesis intends to explore the translation of public signs in Xi'an from the perspective of Eco-translatology,hoping that the Eco-translatology will providea new thinking for the translation of public signsand improve the development of C-E translation of public signs in Xi'an.Chapter1 is the introduction in whichinvolves the background of thestudy, the significance of the study, research objectives, the methodology employed in the thesis and the framework of the thesis.Chapter 2 is the literature review in which summaries the previous studies on C-E translation of public signs and Eco-translatology theory.Chapter 3 is anoverview of public signs, including the definition, classification, linguisticcharacteristicsand functionsof public signs.Chapter 4 is the theoretical framework of this thesis in which the theoretical background and core concepts of Eco-translatology,including translational environment, translator centered, translation as adaption and selection and translation method will be introduced.Chapter 5 introduces the process of C-E translation of public signs in Xi'an from the perspectives of Eco-translatology theory. Finally,it is conclude that beforetranslation, the translator's adaptation to the Translational Eco-environment(TEE)should be paid more attention and in translation process, translators should make adaptiveselection from multi-dimensions,in particular, from linguistic, cultural and communicative dimension.
