This is a report on the translation of Stay Where You Are and Then Leave,a novel written by John Boyne,an Irish writer. The book was published in September 2013,which was popular around the world.Through Alfie,a little boy's observation,we could have a clear idea of the life scene at the beginning and the end of the World War I.And the most moving story in it is how Alfie successfully brings back his wounded father from hospital.Alfie is a resourceful, brave and responsible boy,and it is his overwhelming love for his father that encourages him to bring him back home, regardless of risky situations.Stay Where You Are and Then Leave is a wonderful book, which has a lifelike character description and profound moral.Readers can be moved into tears by the affection of filial love as they lament for the harm and hazard brought about by the war. This report has been made under the theoretic guidance of Reception Aesthetics, which was put forward by Hans Robert Jauss in 1967,a literature professor at the University of Kangcitansi in German.Through plenty of case analyses,a conclusion can be drawn as: Reception Aesthetics centers on readers and makes readers' reception as its goal, which provides a new theoretical foundation and basis for the translation of this book.Reception aesthetics focus on the initiative and active role of the readers throughout the translation process. The targeted readers of this novel are mostly children. Therefore, during the translation process, the translator should take full account of children's thinking, cognitive and language environment so as to provide Chinese children with a better understanding and appreciation of foreign children literature. This report consists of four chapters.Chapter one is a general introduction that briefly goes over the author, the main content of the novel and the significance of translation project.Chapter two contains a brief description of the translation process,an introduction to Reception Aesthetics and its applicability to guide the translation process.By way of illustrations,Chapter three analyzes the application of Reception Aesthetics to the translation of the novel from three aspects: lexical level, syntactical level and textual level. And chapter four offers a conclusion as of personal experience, academic weakness, and humble suggestions for further improvement.
